G-Upgraded Case Study

Perpetua the Pencil and g_cork. Technical compound for Perpetua “we had to invent it” objects

How was it born?

The genesis of Perpetua the pencil (and of g_cork) literally coincides with the genesis of Zantech. It was born from Alisea srl Società Benefit’s desire to give new life to graphite—an inevitable waste product from the manufacturing of electrodes and diamond-tipped tools that would otherwise be discarded—by creating design objects that “didn’t exist before.” The waste was sifted, reduced to a specific particle size, and enhanced with a binder to obtain “g upgraded recycled graphite.” This ingredient was then enriched with other polymers to produce granules compatible with injection molding. This is how the first Zantech formula was created, and from this material the brand Perpetua “we had to invent it” was born.

“An evolved way of rethinking materials and objects.”

In 2013, Alisea srl—already with 20 years of experience in transforming recovered and recycled materials into Made in Italy design objects—was contacted by a client who had tons of graphite scraps.
What to do with them? The first instinct was to refocus on the indelible link between graphite and writing.

The question became: how can we improve the traditional pencil using this new ingredient?
Over a year of research and development led to the creation of a technopolymer with specific characteristics that eliminated the inherent fragility of graphite, making the wooden casing obsolete—thus reducing waste and environmental impact.

Perpetua the pencil was born (patented by Alisea), with Zantech made of 80% “g upgraded.” A true revolution in the world of writing, allowing over 15 grams of graphite—otherwise destined for landfills—to be used up through writing.

Zantech gives Perpetua its unique features:

  • - Writes for 1,120 km, 22 times longer than a traditional pencil;

  • - Doesn’t break when dropped, without using paint or wood;

  • - HB hardness;

  • - The writing body is fused to the eraser without any glue;

  • - Can be sharpened, but writes even without a tip or if broken in two;

  • - Writes on paper and interacts with smartphone and tablet screens;

  • Design by Marta Giardini Studio, Honorable Mention at the 2016 Compasso d’Oro ADI.

Following the use of Zantech in Perpetua the pencil, came Perpetua g_cork—a designer bottle stopper. An object that blends patents and circular economy materials: Zantech® and Sughera (patented by Mixcycling, made of 70% recycled cork).
The two materials are fused using an innovative NGS (No Glue System) co-molding process. The stopper’s shape prevents direct contact between the stem and impurities on surfaces, and the Zantech part can write, just like Perpetua the pencil.

Through Perpetua “we had to invent it” objects, Alisea srl SB has recovered over 70 tons of graphite waste in the first 10 years.
